      Security

Farmington Bank uses a technology called Secure Socket Layers (SSL) to scramble the information that you send us. This technology protects the information you submit or receive through Farmington Bank Online.

Farmington Bank also uses firewalls to limit entry by anyone without proper authorization. A firewall is a security device that regulates the information transferred in and out of a network. The firewall is designed to make sure that communications only occur between approved individuals.

Encryption is a method of scrambling information transmitted over the Internet to protect the users privacy and security. 128-bit encryption is the highest form of encryption available commercially for the Internet today.

Information security is the practice of preventing and detecting unauthorized use of your information. Prevention measures help you to stop unauthorized users from accessing your information. Detection helps you determine whether someone accessed your information and how they accessed it (i.e., through email or the Internet).

Computer use is on the rise and many individuals now use computers to perform sensitive transactions. Although you may not consider your activities sensitive or the information stored on your computer confidential, individuals with malicious intent do.

Malicious individuals (also referred to as hackers, attackers or crackers) do not care about your identity. Their motives for breaking into your computer can vary, but they generally fall into the following categories:

      • Money
      • Industrial Espionage
      • Cyber Warfare
      • For Fun

Software vulnerabilities are discovered daily. If you do not fix these vulnerabilities by applying the latest software patches, they will provide malicious individuals with an avenue to break into your computer. When vulnerabilities are discovered, software vendors usually develop patches to fix the vulnerabilities. However, it is up to you to obtain and install the patches, or correctly configure the software to operate securely.

Secure login uses multifactor authentication to help protect you against identity theft and fraud. It allows you to register computers that you frequently use to access your bank account online. If you attempt to log in to your online account from an unregistered computer, you will have to undergo further authentication steps before accessing your bank account. This prevents attackers from using just your username and password to access your information.

Farmington Bank uses Macromedia Flash Objects to register your computer for online banking. Flash Objects stores data on your computer, which is used to authenticate your computer.

      • 1. Trojan horse programs - Trojan horse programs are a common way for attackers to trick you (sometimes referred to as "social engineering") into installing "back door" programs. These can allow intruders easy access to your computer without your knowledge, change your system configurations, or infect your computer with a computer virus.
      • 2. Back door and remote administration programs - On Windows computers, back door or remote administration programs allow attackers to access and control your computer.
      • 3. Denial of service - A denial-of-service (DoS) attack causes your computer to crash or become so busy that you are unable to use it. Generally, the latest patches will prevent the attack. It is important to note that in addition to being the target of a DoS attack, it is possible for your computer to be used as a participant in a Distributed DoS attack on another system.
      • 4. Mobile code (Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX) - These are programming languages that let web developers write code that is executed by your web browser. Although the code is generally useful, it can be used by intruders to gather information (such as which websites you visit) or to run malicious code on your computer. It is possible to disable Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX in your web browser. We recommend that you do so if you are browsing websites that you are not familiar with or do not trust. Also be aware of the risks involved in the use of mobile code within email programs. Many email programs use the same code as web browsers to display HTML. Thus, vulnerabilities that affect Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX are often applicable to email as well as web pages.
      • 5. Cross-site scripting - A malicious web developer may attach a script to something sent to a website, such as a URL, an element in a form, or a database inquiry. Later, when the website responds to you, the malicious script is transferred to your browser. You can potentially expose your web browser to malicious scripts by following links in web pages, email messages, or newsgroup postings without knowing what they link to, using interactive forms on an untrustworthy site, or viewing online discussion groups, forums, or other dynamically generated pages where users can post text containing HTML tags.
      • 6. Email spoofing - Email spoofing is when an email message appears to have originated from one source when it actually was sent from another source. Email spoofing is often an attempt to trick the user into making a damaging statement or releasing sensitive information (such as passwords.

Phishing is a method by which an attacker tries to acquire sensitive information by posing as a legitimate entity. The purposes vary, but they usually aid in identity theft and social engineering. Phishing generally takes the form of an email.

Regular email (e.g. Hotmail) is not a secure method to send email. Farmington Bank cannot guarantee the security of other email systems and recommends that customers use our secure messaging platform. For further instruction, view our Secure Messaging Procedures.

      • Update Web Browsers and Enable Security Features
      • Install Antimalware Software and ensure that your firewall is turned on
      • Protect Personal Information by looking for encrypted web pages. Encrypted web pages should have a web address that begins with “https” and a padlock icon in the Internet browser’s status bar (this location will vary by browser type).
      • Beware of Instant Message Links and Email Attachments
      • Be Suspicious of Internet Downloads. If anything seems too good to be true, it probably is.
      • Log in to your online accounts regularly and check for suspicious activity.
      • Tear up and shred credit offers, ATM receipts and other types of sensitive information
      • Sign up for electronic statements to stop receiving paper statements via regular mail.

          Online Checking Account Application

On average, it should take between ten to fifteen minutes. To make the process go faster, you and your co-applicant (if applicable) might want to have some specific information on hand before you begin the online application such as:

          • Social Security number
          • Connecticut driver’s license number
          • Employer’s address and phone number
          • Account information for the account from which you will fund your new account. Please note: this account must be in your name.

In addition, we will ask you a few questions taken from your credit report to validate your identity, but rest assured that you do not need to have a copy of it with you to complete the application.

Finally, knowing what type of checking account you wish to open before you begin the application process will also make the process go faster.

Some fields are required because it is basic information needed to complete the checking account application, and much of it is information you already supply for other purposes. The US Patriot Act and other Federal laws require us to gather information that will validate an applicant’s identity.

We are required by federal and state law to make you aware of your consumer rights and any fees that your banking activities may incur.  The acceptance of these disclosures is a condition to opening your account.

Yes. We are required by federal and state law to provide the online disclosures in a format that you can retain for your records.  These are always available on our website.

You can save your application and return to it later. When you do so, you will create a user id and password to come back and pick up where you left off.

Each page has a button that says Next or Continue; simply click this to go forward. In some cases, you may need to read and accept a Disclosure statement for your protection. If you click the Decline button, you will be told that you cannot continue unless the Accept button is clicked.

Click your browser’s Back button. The progress bar on the left side of the screen will show which page you are on.

For your protection, we have a 10 minute time limit for inactivity before our website ends your session. If you should need to step away or need more than 10 minutes, just save your application and come back to it when it's convenient.  When you save your application, you will create a user id and password to come back and pick up where you left off.

Yes you can. You will need to log in with the username and password you created when you saved your application.

Call our Customer Support Center at 860-284-6571 (new customers) or 860-284-6576 (existing customers) or start a new application from the beginning.

Unfortunately, NO. Once your account is opened, we will need to verify your ownership of the funding account within 10 days and you will need to print, sign and return the Signature Verification Form within 30 days.

Some are a result of Federal regulations but we are most concerned about your security. We need to make sure the information being provided is accurate and that it really is you on the other end of the transaction.

Your initial deposit can range from $50 to $1,000. The deposit will be in the form of an electronic funds transfer (EFT) from an existing account which must be in your name.
