About the Featured Organization
The goal of the Funder Collaborative for Reading Success (FCRS) is to strengthen early literacy by providing resources to organizations or programs that are in alignment with the Reading Success by Fourth Grade initiative (RS4G). FCRS has been recognized by the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading, the MA Department of Early Education and Care, and others for supporting Springfield children to achieve reading proficiency by the end of third grade. Currently, only 40% of Springfield’s children read at grade level by the end of third grade.
Farmington Bank’s Support
The Farmington Bank Community Foundation joined FCRS with a $10,000 contribution. In 2016 FCRS made collaborative grants to several nonprofits working with Springfield families to promote and increase reading at home. The Funder Collaborative for Reading Success also supports the Springfield Early Ed Curriculum, Big Day for Pre-K. The FCRS grant will fund 15 additional classes and professional development for educators implementing the curriculum. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the comprehensive curriculum addresses key areas to support growth and development in preschool-aged children, including social-emotional development; oral language development; vocabulary; phonological awareness; alphabet knowledge; emergent reading and writing; mathematics; content-area learning; and physical development.
